History

Egyptian hieroglyph door Proto-Semitic Dal, Daleth Phoenician daleth Greek Delta Etruscan D Roman D

The Semitic letter Dâlet probably developed from the logogram for a fish or a door. There are various Egyptian hieroglyphs that might have inspired this. In Semitic, Ancient Greek, and Latin, the letter represented /d/; in the Etruscan alphabet the letter was superfluous but still retained (see letter B). The equivalent Greek letter is Delta, ‹Δ›.

The minuscule (lower-case) form of ‹d› consists of a loop and a tall vertical stroke. It developed by gradual variations on the majuscule (capital) form. In handwriting, it was common to start the arc to the left of the vertical stroke, resulting in a serif at the top of the arc. This serif was extended while the rest of the letter was reduced, resulting in an angled stroke and loop. The angled stroke slowly developed into a vertical stroke.

I'd like a camera that is high quality and versatile. What do you suggest?
Q. I'm interested in taking photography lessons and take amazing pictures of my travels and of friends/family. I'd like a high quality camera that is easy to travel with and does not take up too much space. However, Im not fond of the super slim cameras. Any suggestions from the photographers out there?

A. Digital or film? what's your budget? If film then you can get a good 35mm SLR, Nikon, Pentax or Canon. If Digital there are some that are better than point and shoot but not as advanced as a DSLR like the Canon S5is that is quite comapct reasonably priced and very flexible. Or a low end DSLR like the Canon Rebel XTi For mor info check out the link below. The rest is up to you.

Do believe there is a G-d but science has not figured out the means to prove it?
Q. The debate over who is G-d or if there is a G-d is an age old argument. Instead of proving or disproving if there is a G-d there is an alternative hypothesis. Do you believe G-d exists but science has not discovered the means to understand or to prove it? Or do you feel this alternative hypothesis is based of erroneous philosophy? NOTE: This is not insult to either side but approach the question of G-d from a philosophical perspective rather than just faith based. Thank you for your time and answers.

A. it depend on how you define god if you define it the way most religion do, as an omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent force that personally intervenes in the universe...no i don't believe that god exists but if you define god as most world renowned scientists do, such as sagan and hawking, that god is an energy that is in everything...yes i think that might be a worthwhile pursuit

How to determine the points that are d distance from another point on a line?
Q. OK, so I have the equation of a line. I know for a fact that it contains a certain point. So how do I determine the two points that are distance d from that point, on that same line?
Asked by dgmulf - Thu Jun 26 17:27:04 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If the coordinates of the point are (x0,y0) and the slope of the line is m (which we assume can be derived from the equation of the line once it is placed in the form y = mx + b), the two points are going to be on either side of the point (x0,y0). Incidentally, if the line is vertical, the answer is (x0, y0 - d) and (x0, y0 + d), so we can assume the line is not vertical and the slope is defined. we know that the points will be of the form (x0 - k, y0 - mk) and (x0 + k, y0 + mk). Since the distance from these points to (x0,y0) is d, we have ((k^2) + (mk)^2)^1/2 = d k^2 + (mk)^2 = d^2 k^2 + (m^2 )(k^2) = d^2 k^2 (1 + m^2) = d^2 k^2 = d^2/(1 + m^2) k = d/(1 + m^2)^1/2 So the two points are (x0 + d/(1 + m^2)^1/2, y0 + md/(1 + m^2)^1/2)… [cont.]
